What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy means treatment with scents. The scents are contained in the essential oil, which is distilled from aromatic plants, and herbs, which can be used in various ways for the maintenance of well being and good health.

Where did aromatherapy begin?

The use of aromatic substances to uplift the spirit and treat diseases can be traced back to Ancient Chinese Civilisations, 3000 years BC. Numerous ancient textbooks describe the art of making ointments, medicated oils and preparations for religious ceremonies as well as special potions to bring love.

Aromatherapy today

Aromatherapy is now widely accepted as a complementary therapy, which can be used alongside conventional medicine.

How does aromatherapy work?

Aromatherapy involves the absorption of essential oils into the body through massage and inhalation.

When essential oil is applied to the skin in massage it is absorbed through the skin and carried around the body in the blood to the various organs.

As we inhale the aromatic molecules of the essential oil, odour signals are sent to the brain to trigger an emotional or instinctive response. The molecules then enter the lungs to be absorbed by the tiny blood vessels there; they are then carried around the body in the blood.

What happens during aromatherapy treatment?

At your first treatment I will take details of your personal and medical history. If you are currently receiving treatment for any chronic or serious illness I will consult with your doctor. I will let you choose oils you like and which are therapeutic. You can have a full body treatment, or back, neck and shoulders.

Who can aromatherapy help?

Aromatherapy can help many people. It is particularly helpful to stress related problems, skin problems, difficulty with sleeping, lack of stamina, aches and pains.
